Amen, Beverley! How wonderful of you to share a long perspective on homeschooling for those of us who are still in the thick of it! Thank you so much!

As a homeschooling family of now grown children we discovered about halfway through our journey that Dad was teaching his children probably as much as the hands-on responsible Mum... It was something we failed to notice and acknowledge.

The loving father who spends many hours at work each day but who makes time to talk to his children, show them what he can do, tell them about the world and about his world, shares with them his hopes and fears - this father is naturally educating his children in the best possible way.

What we have discovered is that homeschooling is less about teaching our children what schools teach children and more about parenting our children to the best of our ability. This is the best education they can get - it is the foundation to life long learning.

I encourage mums and dads everywhere to look again at the many different ways we are naturally teaching our children what they need to know, and to acknowledge and celebrate that no matter how little time is spent with our children, when we attend to their needs - even by working to provide an income to feed and house them - we are indeed educating them.

cheers
Beverley Paine

I think that this is a very inspiring article. It just goes to show how much we can learn from every aspect of life. Its important to teach the kids to have an enquiring mind - all things in life can be understood better this way, and dads have an important role to play in this.

The Hiram that was discussed as possibly being influenced by pagan practices was the Hiram who had a mother from the tribe of Napthali and a dad from Tyre - not the king Hiram. Hence the section of I Kings discussing his contributions to the Temple may have been a subtle suggestion by the Deuteronomistic Historian that pagan influences may have been present in the Temple ground ornaments. (Just making sure my lessons are correctly recounted).

The Dad who led the discussion.
